  • 1500 Hour Cosmetology Program

The Ohio State Board of Cosmetology requires 1500 clock hours for graduation and testing in Cosmetology. During the first 450 hours, you will be in the Essentials Phase of the program. Your time in Essentials is spent in classroom (theory) with work consisting of lecture, demonstrations, book examinations, as well as time in practical where you will practice on mannequins, complete weekly tasks, and be evaluated on your performance. During this time, students develop the basic knowledge of the services that are performed on the student salon floor as well as learning about sanitation, professionalism and communication. Students do not work on clients and therefore must pass all assigned practical and theory tests before entering the next phase where they are promoted to the salon floor to work on clients as well as their mannequins. This phase is designed to accelerate the student to the next level by focusing on the basics.

After the Essentials Phase is when students really dig into the components of the course to richen their knowledge and perfect their skill. Students will still have classroom time each day to break down the educational material chapter by chapter by lectures, class projects and complete subject reviews as well as salon management techniques. This phase is exciting for students because it is designed to allow them the opportunity to apply their knowledge and skills in a real-life environment by working on clients in our student salon. Client-student interaction is under the constant supervision of our licensed professional educators.

This program is taught in English and follows the curriculum outlined by the Ohio State Board of Cosmetology. • Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Are books and equipment included?
A: No, there is a separate fee for books and equipment. We have negotiated with third party vendors to provide you the best pricing on your educational materials.

Q: Do I get to learn about other product lines?
A: We are a MATRIX SCHOOL so we focus exclusively on MATRIX products. We do welcome everyone (from any product line or salon) to be a guest artist and build upon your MATRIX education. We welcome visitors, classes, and guest artists from everywhere in the industry. For more information about MATRIX please use the following link: MATRIX

Q: Do we meet national guest artists?
A: Yes, salon owners and guest artists love to spend time with our Future Professionals at the school. They also love to hire our graduates and enjoy teaching their specialties in our classes. We have quarterly scheduled educational sessions with nationally renowned guest speakers from New York and other metropolitan sites.

Q: Do you help me find a job when I finish?
A: You meet so many incredible guest artists, salon owners, and industry professionals at our school that by the time you graduate, most of our graduates know exactly where they're going. You'll have a lot of opportunities to network and decide where you'd like to be!

    Q: Do you provide housing?
A: We do not offer housing through our school. We can provide you with a list of area housing professionals and Web sites for area housing.

Q: How difficult are the tests and classes?
A: You will need to take written tests. We will offer you many different ways to learn the information. We teach with hands-on training, demonstrations, visuals, and activities, as well as traditional book materials.

Q: How do you help to prepare me for the business side of the beauty industry?
A: We have dedicated courses in professional development, business management and economics, which will prepare you for salon success and business and give you successful strategies for your career. One of our mottos here at Elite is "Great moments come from great opportunities...Elite cosmetologists come from The Elite Institute!"

Q: How many people graduate from your program?
A: Elite is a new program. Our first class will begin in late 2012. We are proud that we are attracting very dedicated and ambitious applicants to our school. We are sure that our graduates will be successful cosmetology professionals.

Q: So how do cosmetologists make money?
A: Most earn a combination of hourly wages, tips and commissions. The amount of money one makes in this business depends on the skills they have and location where they work. Some cosmetologists are trained to do other things like nails and makeup. The more services you can provide your customers, the greater your income potential. Cosmetologists can get paid an hourly rate, a yearly salary, a fee per service provided, tips and commission. Some of these can be combined. For instance, a cosmetologist may get paid an hourly wage, but they will also get tips from their customers. If they are good at what they do and their customers are happy, then they will probably get bigger tips from their clients. Really hard-working and technically good cosmetologists have the potential to make as much money as they want.

Q: How much money will I make once I graduate?
A: Cosmetologists can work in department stores, malls, hospitals, the movie industry, independent salons and others. Working in Hollywood will pay the most money since you would be doing hair and makeup for the stars. These cosmetologists can make up to $100+ an hour. Many cosmetologists make up to $50,000 a year through wages, tips and other commissions. If they are able to sell other services to their customers, then they will make more money that way. The more you can do with someone's hair, the more money you can make because you will have skills that people require in hair and makeup. The exciting thing is that you have so many opportunities ... and a job you'll love! The following links can give you a better idea of cosmetology salaries:

Q: How much time is spent in class?
A: You will spend half of your day in our classroom. In the classroom, we have specialists who will teach you in haircutting, hair coloring, texture, makeup, professional development, and specialty classes. We also welcome guest artists from MATRIX, salon owners, stylists, educators, and business leaders to enhance your learning. We make classroom education fun and provide you with a variety of classes.

Q: I struggled in high school. Will I be able to complete the program?
A: The thing that we love about this industry is that it's about creativity more than anything else. If you have special concerns about testing, reading, etc., we can speak with our Master Educator to assist you in coming up with a plan to succeed.

Q: May I have a special schedule to attend school?
A: We encourage you to follow our schedule through day school or night school.

Q: May I start in day school and switch to night school?
A: We would look at your standing in school, your availability, etc., and we make sure you get an amazing education regardless of whether you attend day or night school.

Q: May I transfer from another school?
A: We welcome transfer students. Before acceptance, we need to assure that you are currently in good standing at your present program, you have resolved financial commitments to your previous school, determine our availability, and assure competency of transfer coursework. You may be required to take an admissions test, practical test, and/or repeat coursework as determined by our admissions team.

Q: May we work on our family?
A: Yes, or course! Your family is welcome to come in during our open clinic floor hours.

Q: What can I do with my license when I finish?
A: The cosmetology industry is growing constantly; there are no limits to where you can work or what you can do! You may work as a salon assistant, stylist, salon owner, educator, session artist, school owner, platform artist, or a variety of other positions.

Q: What holidays are you closed?
A: We close only on the major holidays, so you can stay focused and committed to your schedule and education.

Q: What if I graduate in your state, then move to another state?
A: Every state has its own requirements for licensing. We will be happy to help you to research what you will need to become licensed anywhere in the world!

Q: What if I need time off?
A: We have a calendar of days and times when you may miss school. We strongly encourage you to maintain good attendance and really devote yourself to school, so you get the most out of every day!

    Q: What will I learn?
A: We offer amazing haircutting, hair color, and texture courses, as well as other courses in nails, makeup, facials, and professional development. You will graduate with an incredible sense of confidence, professionalism, and creativity and gain MATRIX networking opportunities.

Q: When do I practice on a real person?
A: You will spend the first six weeks in our Elite Essentials program, when you will learn and practice on mannequin heads. After the six weeks, we test you to make sure you are ready and then you will begin the Adaptive course, in which you take guests and attend class each day.

    Q: Who are the clients?
A: We have both request and walk-in guests, who require everything from haircuts and hair color to scalp treatments. We encourage you to build a clientele with your family, friends, and return guests. We have a program to help you to learn how to build a clientele and to experience rebooking.

Q: Will I be able to make a lot of money right away?
A: You will most likely begin as an assistant in a salon and work to build your clientele. By following the guidelines you have learned, promoting yourself, and continuing to train, you have a lot of potential for financial rewards and a job you'll love!

    Financial Assistance

*School not yet eligible for Federal Student Aid*

    Financial Aid

A financial aid program is available to help a student and family meet the expenses of a degree in cosmetology. A degree in cosmetology is one of the most important investments you can make. You and your family will be expected to contribute as much as you can from your own resources to help meet college expenses.
The purpose of financial aid is to help students and families meet educational expenses that cannot be met through their own resources. Financial aid can be either need-based or non-need-based. The results of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) along with the cost-of-education will determine whether or not a student has financial need.
There are several types of financial aid available. Grants and scholarships are considered "gift aid" because they generally do not have to be repaid. Loans are considered "self-help aid" because loans have to be repaid. Loans are by far the largest source of financial aid for the majority of students and families. Most grants, some loans (Subsidized Stafford) are need-based financial aid programs. The Unsubsidized Stafford and the Parent Loan for Undergraduate Students (PLUS) are considered non-need-based. Scholarships can be based upon merit, financial need, or both. There are three main sources of financial aid available to our students. These include the federal government, the institution and private entities. The federal government is the largest source of financial aid.

    Completing the FAFSA

Each year, students must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The FAFSA serves as the application for all federal financial aid at Elite Institute of Cosmetology. You should file the FAFSA or Renewal FAFSA online at http://www.fafsa.gov. This is the fastest and most efficient way to file the FAFSA. FAFSA on the Web provides numerous edit checks that will help prevent errors. FAFSA on the Web is available beginning January 1 each year.
You and your parent (if you are a dependent student) should each use PINs to sign the FAFSA electronically. If you or your parent do not already have a PIN, apply for one at http://pin.ed.gov. Elite Institute of Cosmetology school code is 042548, which will be needed on your FAFSA.

    FAFSA Results

The federal government will process your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and electronically send the results to the Financial Aid Office at Elite Institute of Cosmetology provided you listed us as one of the schools to receive the results of your FAFSA. You will also receive notification in the form of a Student Aid Report (SAR).
When you file your FAFSA online and provide a valid e-mail address, you will receive your SAR online. If you do not provide a valid e-mail address, you will receive a SAR Information Acknowledgement in the mail. You can call 1-800-4-FEDAID (1-800-433-3243) to request a paper SAR if necessary. You should review your SAR carefully. It will contain the information you reported on the FAFSA. If you need to make corrections to your FAFSA information, you may do this online or by sending the SAR to Elite Institute of Cosmetology with the corrections indicated.
The data you put on your FAFSA is put through a needs analysis formula called the Federal Methodology. The output of this formula is called the Expected Family Contribution (EFC). The lower your EFC, the more financial need you will have. The lowest possible EFC is zero. In extreme cases, the EFC can go as high as 99,999.

    Eligibility Requirements

Your Expected Family Contribution, i.e., the results of your FAFSA, subtracted from your Cost-of-Attendance equals your financial need.

Cost of Education - Expected Family Contribution = Financial Need

How much financial need you demonstrate will determine the programs for which you qualify. Even if you have no financial need, you will still qualify for the Unsubsidized Stafford Loan and Parent Loan for Undergraduate Students (PLUS). Your parent must be willing to apply for the PLUS loan and have a satisfactory credit history. Unfortunately, there is no guarantee that your aid will cover your full financial need or the full cost of attendance. Financial Aid and budget information for programs less than 1800 hours will be compiled when application is made. Not all programs under 1800 hours will qualify for Financial Aid.
In order to be eligible for most federal financial aid programs, you must meet all of the following eligibility requirements:
    - have financial need, except for some loan programs.
    - have a high school diploma or General Education Development (GED) Certificate, or meet other standards established by your state and approved by the U.S. Department of Education. (Students who have been home schooled should contact the Financial Aid Office for guidance.)
    - be enrolled or accepted for enrollment as a regular student working towards a degree in an eligible program.
    - be a U.S. citizen or eligible noncitizen.
    - have a valid Social Security Number.
    - make satisfactory academic progress.
    - sign a statement of education purpose and a certification statement indicating that you are not in default on a student loan nor owe an overpayment on a grant. Both statements are found on the FAFSA.
    - register with the Selective Service, if required. You can register online at the Selective Service System's web site.
    - never been convicted under a federal or state law of possessing or selling illegal drugs during a period of enrollment for which you were receiving federal student aid (grants, loans, and/or work-study).

    Award Notification

Once we receive the results of your FAFSA and if you are admitted to Elite Institute of Cosmetology, we will send you an Award Notice. We also continue to update award notices throughout the school year if your aid package is revised. If you have questions about an award notice you receive, you should contact the Financial Aid Office. If you decide not to attend Elite Institute of Cosmetology, please let us know. You also should inform the Managing Director to cancel your contract.

    Overawards

According to federal law, a student cannot receive aid that exceeds the student's financial need nor can the student receive aid that exceeds the student's cost of attendance. When an overaward exists, the student's aid must be reduced.

    PROGRAMS AT A GLANCE

Elite Institute of Cosmetology is currently not authorized to offer the above listed programs.
The first grants will be disbursed after the first 10 daysí attendance; subsequent disbursements will be at 450 increments. The first loan disbursement will be at the 30 day attendance mark, subsequent will be at 450 hour increments. Refunds will be processed within 10 business days.
